Double FeatureJune 2010 - Dum dum dah dum. Dum dum dah dummmmmm. You know what tune that is and you know what month this is. Therefore, you know what's coming next. Our first film dealing with this very obvious topic is Guess Who. This PG-13 2005 comedy is based on the 1967 movie Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher and Zoe Saldana star. Mac plays Percy Jones, a successful bank loan officer about to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary by renewing his vows with his wife, played by Judith Scott. Saldana is their daughter, Terri, a successful photographer who's just gotten engaged to Simon Green (Kutcher), a successful corporate trader. Terri has told her parents about her boyfriend, but she hasn't told them that he's white or that they're engaged. When they show up, mom is cool, but dad Percy goes a little ballistic. He gets past the color part, but is convinced that Simon is hiding something. Overall review: Ehhh, it was OK. Funnier than I thought and Ashton Kutcher is very personable. But, the movie is uneven. It rolls along for a while then comes to a complete stop. It picks up again then stops. And so on. And, one technical thing bothered me. Terri is supposed to be a professional photographer. Yet, at one point, she takes a picture of her father sitting in front of a window! And, she uses a flash! She oughtta know better. Here's what I know about our second film, Made of Honor, a PG-13 comedy from 2008. McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy wakes up to find himself in a movie that's neither good nor bad, neither funny nor boring. Starring alongside Patrick Dempsey are Michelle Monaghan (from Gone Baby Gone) and Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt on Grey's). Dempsey plays a rich guy named Tom who's really rich now because he invented the coffee collar (that cardboard thing that goes around your coffee cup). Monaghan is Hannah, currently working as some sort of art expert at a museum in NYC. They met 10 years earlier when both were students at Cornell and Tom mistakenly got into bed with Hannah. They've since become best friends, but Tom is a confirmed bachelor who juggles lots of women by following his own set of dating rules. When Hannah is sent on a six-week business trip to Scotland, Tom realizes that he loves her. But, before he can tell her, Hannah introduces Tom to Colin (McKidd), her new Scottish fiancé. Then, because Tom is her best friend, Hannah asks him to be her maid of honor. He says yes and plots to use the opportunity to change Hannah's mind. Overall review: Ehhh, it was OK. My main feeling about this movie is that I have no feelings about this movie. It's just kind of there. It has a few funny moments but just as many unfunny ones. The characters are not unlikeable, but I didn't particularly care about them, either. Watch it if you want, but you won't be missing anything if you don't. |
