Word of the Year

A panel of linguists has decided the word that best reflects 2009 is tweet which refers to a short message sent via twitter.com. It can also be used as a verb to indicate the sending of such a message.

In keeping with the technology theme, the panel selected google as the Word of the Decade. Like tweet, google can be used as a noun or a verb. As a noun, Google refers to the powerful Internet search engine. It's also used as verb to mean "search the Internet," even if a search engine other than Google is used.

The American Dialect Society chose the Word of the Year and the Word of the Decade on January 8, 2010 at its meeting in Baltimore. Other words receiving votes for WOTY included H1N1 and public option. Nominees for Word of the Decade included blog, text and war on terror.
